Linear Q Transition
loudspeaker series
[ rev 05/16/03 ]
General Description:
Dalbec Audio's Linear Q
Transition loudspeaker series, herein referred to as "LQt", exhibit
numerous desirable performance characteristics not available in size or price
equivalents. The LQt series is designed
to excel in mid
to far field (>50')
quality reinforcement environments and performing arts applications especially
in reverberant, acoustically challenged
venues, or in situations where conventional systems have not proven successful.
Directivity control
management is the most important characteristic that differentiates the LQt
series from traditional loudspeaker arrays.
Conventional compact type systems lack usable directivity control
between the critical 100Hz to 2kHz range.
These systems achieve satisfactory directivity only above the HF (high
frequency) cross point (typically
around 2kHz) rendering the programming
between 100Hz and 2kHz unacceptable in critical venues. Most manufacturers publish directivity
figures for their assemblies, stating only the high frequency (HF) wave guide
performance. There has been a recent
trend with some manufacturers publishing "average" directivity data
which still avoids specific directivity figures for frequencies under
2kHz. It is shameful that such
misrepresented estimates are used as the source data fed into the latest wave
of computer generated performance predictions.
Manufacturers of said smaller
format assemblies avoid publishing specifications on directivity control for
the lower frequencies due to the fact that little or no control is present
below approximately 2kHz with their units.
This results in minimal articulate distance, exaggerated room
interaction, poor mid to far field balance, as well as spill over to the
microphone sources which also reduces gain to feedback ratios. Unfortunately, otherwise wonderful new
installations have been compromised by misrepresented loudspeaker components,
and the trend to supply these flawed systems is growing.
The LQt Concept:
A Solution to These Directivity Problems
The most critical performance
characteristic a loudspeaker can exhibit is wideband control of directivity
suited to the application. Conventional
loudspeaker parameters such as frequency response and phase coherence are
easily correctable with the most basic of electronic processing, yet no device
exists to convert a conventional loudspeaker with chaotic LF and MB directivity
charateristics into an acceptable performer.
The Dalbec Audio LQt series
utilizes proprietary physical design characteristics that bridge the gap
between the effective yet very large and exotic far field systems and the
conventional smaller format units lacking directivity control. Through more than 15 years of research and
field application, an ideal combination of compact component size and
directivity performance has been realized, yielding a smooth, linear transition
of directivity from the predictable high frequencies, through the critical and
often neglected mid and lower frequencies, rendering conventional compact array
designs unacceptable in critical applications.

LQt technology is a parameter
we address as a function of critical performance. Secondary advanced concept designs include the following:
A. Advanced
Large Format H.F. Assemblies
A significant HF driver motor
to wave guide throat design removes the HF driver motor from the MB / LF (mid band / low
frequency) wave guide cavity placing the
HF wave guide at the acoustic center of the
MB / LF wave guide improving coherence, in addition to eliminating all stress on the
wave guide throat. Another distinct advantage
to this mounting method allows the HF wave guide exit to sum into the MB / LF wave guide
without a front wave guide mounting apparatus to aberrate the mix. CAD machining was required to enable us to
duplicate the complex HF wave guide model parts from a perfect inert polymer - WOOD! Yes, all wave guide parts are of voidless
laminated hardwood, effectively inert, structurally and acoustically superior
to cast or molded wave guides.

2-12, 3 Component, Two Way Line Array
Also
Solves Vertical Control Deficiencies
In addition to addressing and
improving component control in the horizontal plane, we focused much attention
to developing specific models with superior vertical directivity performance.
Conventional vertical line arrays to date have proven to be the most accepted
mechanical method to improve vertical control.
Unfortunately conventional arrays possess inherent deficiencies, such as phase cancellations between common
drivers above and below the vertical
axis center point. Our Dalbec LQt model
2-12 DC, three component, 2-way enclosure configuration, when utilized in conjunction
with a proper loudspeaker management processor, virtually eliminates vertical
cancellation errors, exhibiting
vertical
Cylindrical wavefront
characteristics with point source
fidelity.
C. General
Misc. / Details
1. Driver Component Selection
The source of radiation is of
utmost importance in realizing faithful, reliable operation, and we utilize the
best components available, which are specifically manufactured to our exacting
specifications. Our decades of field
testing raw components from vendors around the world has yielded a large
database of the best performing drive assemblies regardless of cost. From our experience, most manufacturers of
premium drive components don't seem to produce very good finished loudspeaker
products. Likewise, many of the names
associated with premium professional loudspeaker assemblies don't produce their
own drive components either.
2. Architectural & Aesthetic
Considerations
Our finish department is able
to provide a wide variety of custom appearances. Although standard enclosures include black, or white in a
textured satin finish, or natural birch, we can finish in any furniture grade
in either satin, or full gloss clear coat.
In addition to the wide variety of optional finishes, the grilles can be
custom painted or covered in a wide range of available colored acoustic fabric.
Additionally, all of our components are available in weather resistant packages
from high moisture to full exposure conditions.
